![]() It attacks her and she shouts “I told you to leave me alone” as she fights it off. The scene jumps to Selene coming face to face with an alien sitting in a wheelchair (which shows up in visions throughout the game). After meeting a few extra conditions, Selene eventually interacts with her car in the final area. The game’s secret ending is far more complicated. The bigger picture is much more personal. It’s hard to say if anything that happens on Atrops is literal or just metaphor. It even justifies the game’s roguelite Groundhogs Day premise: she’s constantly reliving the tragedy. It’s why we see so many squids (a nod to her daughter’s toy) and why the final level takes place underwater. Everything starts to make sense when viewed through that lens. It’s a game about trauma and a protagonist who can’t stop replaying a horrific event in her head. There are a few ways to interpret this, but here’s the psychological explanation: the entire game is Selene reliving that moment. Selene struggles to get her child out of the car, but is ripped away by some unseen force before she can. She swerves, sending the car off a bridge and underwater. Selene looks down to tune the radio and looks up in time to see an astronaut standing in the middle of the road. The kid asks Selene “Mom, do you see the white shadow?” and then things get tragic. Notably, Selene’s child is holding an octopus toy in the scene. The monstrous presentation of her mother shows Selene's inner feelings about her, and the guilt she harbors for her treatment of her (displayed through the violent shove at the beginning of the cutscene). After defeating the final boss, Selene comes face to face with a giant sea creature and says “Are you the one who brought me here?” The game then jumps to a flashback on Earth of Selene (or someone who looks like her, at least) driving at night with her child in the backseat. The many corpses left on Atropos from Selene's failed attempts to escape represent her inability to move past the trauma, and her inability to forgive herself. The blame Selene holds for herself encompasses all aspects of the incident, leading to a cycle of grief and guilt shown through the time loop on Atropos. Not only was Selene driving the car, but she was the obstacle that caused the accident. This ending of Returnal is shrouded in mystery but answers a few more questions about details of Selene's past. Players hear Selene gasp, and the credits roll. The next scene cuts to Selene struggling to swim to the surface of the water. A brown station wagon comes out of the darkness and swerves to avoid Selene. Turning towards the dark void surrounding them, Selene and the player watch as Atropos shifts into a dark, gloomy bridge. The creature is revealed to be a twisted version of Selene's mother, Theia. It dives to attack her, but she shoves it to the floor and it croaks her name. Selene approaches a wheelchair with a pregnant skeletal creature residing in it. The final cutscene will then trigger to reveal the secret ending.Īfter unlocking the secret ending in Returnal, players will watch a final cutscene. Players will have to obtain all the Sunface Fragments, find the car keys, and unlock the car after defeating Ophion for the final time. After the credits roll, players must start a fresh run. To do this, players will need to have defeated Ophion in Returnal's sixth biome, the Abyssal Scar. ![]() Firstly, this ending will only unlock by playing through Act 3 of Returnal's campaign. To unlock Returnal's secret ending, players will need to complete a few tedious tasks. Upon completing the game the first time, players will see that Helios was killed in a car crash, and Theia was badly injured. Her strained relationship with her mother, Theia, and the death of her son Helios are the main traumas that Selene has had to conquer throughout her life. During Selene's search for the White Shadow, a mysterious yet familiar signal, players will find themselves experiencing flashbacks to their character's rather troubled life. Returnal has six biomes that players will have to conquer, each with their own challenges and boss fights to pass before moving on to the next.
